Saturday 25 November 1893, Issue 8225 Wedding At Crediton. A very pretty wedding was solemnised at Crediton on Tuesday [21 Nov 1893] between MISS LYDIA WELLINGTON (daughter of Mr J. WELLINGTON, steward to Mr R. Buller) and MR W. J. BERRY, eldest son of MR W. B. BERRY, builder and contractor of the town. The bride was given away by her father. After the ceremony was over the happy pair were driven to Exeter en route for London. The bells of Holy Cross rang many merry peals during the afternoon. Mr Proctor, of the Ship Hotel, supplied the carriages. The employees of MR W. B. BERRY, sat down to a supper in the evening at the King's Arms, given by the bridegroom in honour of the event, have presented him with a marble clock and ornaments. The gifts were numerous. |

Initially a builder with his father William moved to London after his marriage, by 1901 census had moved out to Kingston-on-Thames, Surrey. He became the chief housing estates surveyor to London County Council.
In Kellys 1893 Directory William John Berry is in Church Street, Crediton - Surveyor, inspector of nuisances and collector turban, rural and sanitary authorities, and deputy registrar of births and deaths.
In 1915 he is recorded in the Crediton Voter's list by virtue of his property owning status, though his residence is shown as 21 Kingston Hill, Kingston on Thames. he is recorded as owning St Martin's, Ivy Cottage, 1 Western Road and Cockles Lane!
