In 1881 John is a boarder in Mill Street with maiden aunts Mary Ann Madge, Eliza Madge, and Thirza Madge at Mill Street, Crediton. With him from Liverpool is 26 year old Silvanus Madge, Carpenter. They are in the house of Thomas Marles, also a carpenter.
In 1891 John is working as a butcher's assistant for butcher John Hellier at Snake Ash, Newton St Cyres. His place of birth is recorded as Crediton, though it was Liverpool. He has been brought up in Crediton by his aunts.
In 1901 John and Ellen were living at 7 Beltran Road off Wandsworth Bridge Road in South Fulham, London. They had a 22 year old lodger, Irish labourer Michael Nihill.
At the time of Edith's birth the family were living at Mill Street, Crediton, where John was a Master Butcher
In 1911 they had moved to Bath - to 15 Camden Cottage, Hedgemead. John and Ellen are with Evelyn, Edith and Dorothy. John is a butcher journeyman.7
In 1891 Ellen is Housemaid for 65 year old Miss Ann Saul at 21 Cathcart Place, Brompton, South Kensington.8
