Note on Husband: Simon COOMBE (1)
Poor men often enrolled in the militia in return for payment from those who were drawn by lot for service, but wished to avoid it. In 1810, 1811 and 1813 Simon Coombe substituted for William Mayne, . As the wives and children of these militia subsitutute were left without wages they were eligible for parish relief. Simon Coombe served from 25 November 1809 to 22 April 1810, and the parish of Silverton paid two pounds two shillings being 2 shillings per week for 21 weeks. This was then reclaimed from William Mayne's parish of Colyton. The same happened for the period 13 April to 12 October, when relief of 2/4p per week was paid for 26 weeks, and again for the period 10 October to 10th April - another 26 week period. Simon now had two children, and relief was paid at 4 shillings per week - a total of £5.4.0 for the period.
