In 1888 Eliza passes away and by 1891 George is living at Moor Cottage in Cruwys Morchard with his 6 year old son, Walter.
He passes away in 1893. His death is registered at Tiverton in March Q aged 40 GRO Ref; 5b 329
All census documentation suggests that George is the son of Thomas and Sarah Sharland but descendant of George's, Debbie Suffield has provided a copy of his marriage certificate whch states George's father is George, not Thomas. The certificate was issued in 1983 by the GRO in London. No birth registration or earlier census records can equate to this. I had hoped to find a clue through George's sons. Indeed his son, Daniel in 1901 is boarding with a Richard Bennett in Washford Pyne, who happens to be the nephew of Thomas and Sarah Sharland, the son of George Bennett. Is this pure coincidence or is this a clue. THe residence of Richard Bennett happens to be Littleborough where Thomas and Sarah Sharland resided in 1861 with their children including 8 year old George.
At the same time it must not be forgotten that in March Q 1852 in Tiverton another George Sharland was registered, believed to be the son of William A Sharland of Tiverton. A death registration is found for a George Sharland at Tiverton in March Q 1869 aged 16. This could be William's son who may have died shortly before his 17th birthday. Census records would suggest so.
For now the mystery remains unresolved (26/1/2008)
Birth registered at Tiverton Dec Q 1856 GRO Ref 5b 407
In 1861 and 1871 census returns Eliza is listed as the daughter of William and Mary Radford residing Cruwys Morchard.
At the age of 20 in 1877 she marries George Sharland, however father's name on the certificate, copy dated 1983, is James Radford. A William Radford is shown as one of two witness's. The 1871 census shows James Radford, a widower aged 46 residing at Middleway. There is no evidence of a daughter, Eliza.
Eliza died in 1888 registered at Tiverton, March Q GRO Ref 5b 367
