In 1881 Joseph is found as a 18 year old soldier at Infantry Camp 2, St Botolphs, Colchester residing with fellow officer Patrick Riley from Ireland and his family together with 18 yr old Joseph Snape of Lancashire. Most of the soldiers however seem to hail from the county of Devon. PRO Ref: RG11/1789 Folio 90 Page 47

 

Unable to trace marriage at present but suspect a military one

 

In 1891he is found living in Torcross, Stokenham aged 25 and married to Mary from Dublin, Ireland PRO Ref: RG12/1716 Folio 24 Page 24

 

He is left a widower in 1896 with Mary's death and in 1901 he is found as a horseman on a farm at Woodhouse, Ashcombe, Devon in service for Alfred J Wryford RG13/2040 Folio 104 Page 3
