In 1881 aged 8 years he resided at Coobeland, Cruwys Morchard, Devon, England with his parents and siblings
In 1891 aged 18 he was still in the family home at Plymtree, Cruwys Morchard, Devon.
A ships passenger record has been found for a William Sharland departing Liverpool on the Majestic and arriving at the port of New York on 12th April 1893. He was aged 20, a agricultural labourer and his last residence was given as Chester and final destination as Philadelphia. He had 1 piece of luggage.

A second record has been found in 1898. A William Sharland aged 25 yrs & 9 months departing Southampton March 19th 1898 on the St Paul arriving New York March 26th 1898. Occupation Farmer. Record not clear but he stated he had been to USA before to Ann Arbour and possibly reads Sister in Dexter.

In 1903 he married Lillie May Ramsdell, with his nephew, William Boaden as Best man. The couple honeymooned in Detroit before returning to live with her parents

The 1910 US Federal Census for Ingham, Ingham County, Michigan Roll T624_651 Page 9A Emuneration District 56 indicates William as arriving in US 1892 and English born and married to Lillie
Lillie died in 1916 leaving him a widow. She and William had no children.
1919 he married his 2nd wife Lucy Ide
1920 US Federal Census show William married to Lucy but he also has Mary Ann Ramsdell, the 74 yr old mother of his first wife living in the household in Dansville Village, Ingham Township. The record also reveals William was nationalised in 1904. SourceT625_771 Page 1A Emuneration District 86

There were no children of the marriage.
William died in 1947 leaving Lucy a widow.3
