Pioneer, then Sapper Bellringer, 127797 (orig 3609) of the 2nd Signal Company Royal Engineers enlisted in 1915 in the territorial army. He transferred to the regular army RE on 14 October 1916 , and qualified as a signaller on 15 Dec 1917, and promoted to Sapper. He was posted to France on 25 October 1916.He was wounded in a gas attack on 12 March 1918 and transferred to England on 23 March 1918, where he was in hospital in Dewsbury for 18 days, before being transferred to a convalescent camp for 5 weeks, when he was returned to duty. He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. He was transferred to the reserve on 12 Feb 1919
