Note on Husband: Arthur ASHPLANT

The family initially requested that Arthur be admitted to the orphanage, but Edith was taken. In 1911 and 1915 the family were living at Glencreedy Cottages, Mill Street, Crediton. Arthur served as a Driver in the 4th Wessex Brigade, Royal Field Artillery in the First War. He seems to have been serving in North Africa at the end of the war.

In 1928 he emigrated to Canada on the SS Doric, sailing from Liverpool to Quebec on 27th July 1928, described as a colliery worker in England, he claimed that he intended to farm in Canada. He emigrated under the Landed Immigrant scheme.

After the outbreak of the Spanish Civil war he made his way to Spain, where he fought in the Mac-Pap Battalion of the International Brigade. On 19th November 1937 Arthur wrote to his niece Olive, giving Albacete as his address whilst he was on the line.

Presumably he left Spain in with the other Brigaders, as he sailed back to Canada on 3rd February 1939 from Liverpool to Halifax and St John on the Duchess of Bedford, sailing 3rd class in the company of many other soldiers from the International Brigades returning home.
