Neville Enderson has suggested that John was born out of wedlock to Elizabeth in 1808, when he was baptised in Clannaborough, but the father was Samuel Chudleigh. Sam then left to serve in the militia. On his return Elizabeth married him in Stoke Damerel, and then baptised John again in Colebrooke. This scenario fits with what is known about John by one of his descendants. He gives his date of birth between 1810 and 1814, but at his death his age was given as 78, which fits with the 1808 birth.
