A Thomas Berry born in Crediton is found in this area of Holborn, as a visitor to another Thomas Berry, a Cordwainer from Herts. This seems to be a very anonymous part of London, with many Irish residents, and few people giving much detail about their place of birth. This may or may not be our Thomas. The family history simply records that Bricklaying was not to his taste and he went to sea.

Mary, Martha and Emily are visiting William Wood aged 46 - Widower, Brazier and Manager of Gas Works and his daughter Mary . "Sister" is written in above the word Visitor. William Wood is from Halifax Yorkshire. Mary from Crediton. The birth certificate for Emily, b.1850 who is with Mary at this census clearly indicates her maiden name was Blatchford, and the presence of Martha in this census, the name and occupation of Emily's father on the birth certificate, and the description of Mary as a Stone Mason's Wife in this census all point to this being the family of Thomas Berry. Where is Thomas? How is Mary related to a Brazier from Halifax?

Note on Husband: Thomas BERRY

John Berry snr apprenticed his three sons to different trades. John was the plumber and carried on his business in the High street.

William was the carpenter - he took over the family business. Thomas was a mason, but he had no taste for it, and went to sea.

In 1841 Thomas is living with his wife and two children in Park Street.

In 1851 the Flying Post reports a case heard at the Crediton District County Court on September 1st, when Field has initiated an action against William Berry after Thomas - a sailor home on a visit, together with his brother-in-law Bellringer sold iron objects belonging to John Berry senior to Mr Field, Mary Berry later remonstrated with Field and demanded tha some of the objects be returned, as they should not have been sold. Brother William then took the objects from Field's premises without his permission. The judgement was reserved, but the judge expressed the view that Berry had trespassed, and it would have been better had he sued for recovery of the objects. This establishes clearly that Thomas was a sailor by 1851.9

Note on Wife: Mary BLATCHFORD

Mary was baptised in Bowden Hill Presbyterian Chapel.

In 1851 she is visiting William Wood and his daughter, a widower, brazier and manager of gas works, at 9 North Place Greenwich. She is with daughter Martha and newly born Emily.

In 1871 she is an attendant at the District Lunatic asylum, at St Mary, Stratford le Bow. Her status is still shown as married.
