From the London Gazette " For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He went forward and held a heavily shelled position with his Lewis gun, covering the retirement of troops until all his ammunition was exhausted. He then collected more ammunition and covered the retirement from another position. He did similar work on the following day until relieved. His daring and skill with his gun caused the enemy severe losses and materially assist5ed the defence." |
