Individual Note

According to Ralph Miller, "Edith eventually became the tutor to the Tsar Nicholas

II's children. After the 1917 revolution, she stayed on in Moscow until 1924 when she emigrated to the United States. My uncle James tells me that Edith told her that she had lived next door to Mrs Roosevelt (FDR's mother) on fifth Avenue in New York City inthe 30's. One day she went over to visit with Mrs. Roosevelt and was shown into the library while Mrs. Roosevelt finished her business with another visitor. In the library was a large dog lying on the hearth; and a canary in a cage. Feeling the bird needed to spread its

wings, Edith let the bird out to fly around the room for a while. The bird landed on the hearth just in front of the dog. The dog looked up and swallowed the bird whole. Edith was horrified. Realizing her predicament, she rushed out and down the street to a pet store and purchased another canary. Rushing back, she replaced the bird in the cage before Mrs. Roosevelt returned.

Interestingly, Mrs. Roosevelt never knew the difference! She did complain that her canary never sang any more - Edith had bought a female and only males sing!"

There is no documentary evidence discovered yet to show her emigration to the USA, but by the 1930s she seems to have settled in the UK.

Edith seemed to have made a few crossings to the USA from England. In 1933 she was almost certainly not a US resident, as she had applied for a visa in October, and sailed from Southampton to New York on the SS President Roosevelt, on 4th November 1933. Her last permanent residence was given as England, and her intended future permanent residence was given as England.

On May 15th 1936 she arrived in Southampton from New York on the SS Berengaria. She gives London as her permanent home, and her address as 10 Langlen Gardens, London NW5.

On October 8th 1937 she sailed from London to New York on the American Farmer
