Note on Husband: Robert Conibeer
Robert and Elizabeth are removed from Dawlish to Sandford in 1788, the year of their marriage. In her settlement examination in 1813 daughter Ann describes her father's legal place of settlement being Colebrooke. In the Sandford 1793 census, Robert and Elizabeth Conybeer nee Salter are living at Spicers, with children Thomas Ann and Betty. In the Sandford 1800 census Robert Conybeer is living at Roger's with wife Elizabeth nee Salter, and children Thomas, Betty, Ann, Mary, Samuel, Susan and Grace.
Note on Child 2: Elizabeth Connybear
A bastardy examination of Betty Conibeer (Elizabeth on the front of the file) found that the male bastard borne in 1806 was the offspring of "connection" with a stranger she met on the road to Crediton.
The parish record for John's baptism describes Elizabeth as a single woman. Between1813 and 1826 there are 6 baptisms recorded for sons born to Connibear mothers who are not married.
Note on Child 3: Ann Conibeer
According to her settlement examination in 1813, when she was about 14 years old her father placed her with Grace Locke in Colebrooke to learn weaving, with whom she lived for about 12 months, that she never had a year at any place nor ever agreed for a year except for Mr May of Zeal Monachorum , Yeoman, with whom she hired herself for a year at the wages of one shilling per week and lived there forty weeks , when she was discharged, and received the wages then due to her, since when she has not done any act whereby to gain a settlement.
Note on Child 7: Grace Conibeer
Grace was apprenticed to Robert Madge in 1809.
Bastardy order made against James Fey on 26th October 1818 of one guinea for Grace Conibeer's lying in and eighteen pence weekly for maintenance. A second order was made on 21st November 1822 as the original had been mislaid. The replacement was for only one pound for lying in and 15 pence for maintenance! Bastardy order made against John Screech in 1823, as the father of Samuel Connibeer.
