Lilian Boydell (1889-1974) was the daughter and grand daughter of Iron Founders in Leigh, Lancashire. But her lineage can be traced back a thousand years to Heute or Helto de Boidele, and through his wife back to Norman barons, including her 27 x great grandfather who was killed at the Battle of Hastings.
The Boydells themselves were Normans, originating from Bois d'Elle in North West France. They held lands in Cheshire, Lancashire and what is now North Wales. Dodleston, Lymme, Grappenhall and Leigh they held, and were patrons of St Werburgh's Abbey. One of their descendants was the English engraver John Boydell who went on to become Lord Mayor of London in 1791.
Lil's family was from Leigh. It seems she met agricultural engineer George Jefferis Wright from Sandford in Devon through family business connections. They lived for spells in Lancashire and Devon after the marriage before moving to Winchester, where they settled. | ![]() | ![]() | ||||||||||

| The Boydell tree here has been unashamedly borrowed from the sites of Mick Boydell and William D Döscher who have both provided a considerably more impressive genealogy covering much more of the family. The source for the early information is Ormerod's history of Cheshire. Mick has provided details of his sources on his site. The birth and death dates for the early part of the pedigree are approximate. | ||||||||||||
