History, Gazetteer and Directory of Devonshire by William White, for 1850

As well as the brief descriptions of the villages and towns, the chief landowners, churches and schools, the Directory of course had lists of gentry, worthies and tradespeople for each town. You will find those names transcribed below for some of the villages of interest to our families.

Those marked 1 are in East Town; 2, High Street; 3, Market Street; 4, North Street; and 5, in Parliament Street
 
The Post-Office is at Mr. Francis Shute's, High street. Letters dispatched at 45 minutes past 12 in the afternoon, and at 10 minutes past 7 in the evening, via Exeter; and to  Bideford, Barnstaple, &c., every morning.
