Henry Percy Carpenter was born in 1870 to James Henry and Mary Ann (nee Carpenter) Carpenter at Middle Bradley. He was their third son and was only 5 years old when they moved to Cheltenham where he was educated at Cheltenham Grammar School. Leaving school in 1844 he (Percy) was apprenticed to the ironmongers Hope & Alger of 153 Westgate, Gloucester for a period of 4 years. The conditions of his Indenture were a premium of £70 was paid to the employers and they agreed to pay Percy a wage of 4/- (20p) per week during the fourth year of his service. At the conclusion of his 4 years (1889) Percy went to London and joined his uncle James. In 1892 they became partners trading as J.W. & H.P. Carpenter.
