The Horse and Groom , later called the White Horse, was closed c.1900 destroyed in an air raid in 1943.
Reported on Monday 5 December 1887.
On Saturday morning, about one o'clock, Mr James Holcombe , residing at 25 Orchard Gardens, Teignmouth, expired suddenly at his residence. The deceased, who had been ailing, stated to some friends whom he visited on Friday evening that he intended retiring to rest early that night, and it is believed that between twelve and one o'clockMr Holcombe, feeling unwell, and without calling his servant, went downstairs and made himself a cup of tea, then returning to his bedroom, on reaching which he expired almost immediately. He appeared to be dead when the servant, who was awakened by his falling, reached the room. Mr Holcombe, who was a native of Crediton, had been a resident of Teignmouth for about fifty years, and only recently retired from business as a maltster. He was identified with most of the public institutions of the town, and lately resigned his seat on the Local Board, of which he had been a member about twenty-five years. Mr Holcombe was also one of the promoters of the Teignmouth Public Baths Committee (Limited), and a director since the formation of the Company. He was greatly respected by a large circle of friends, and his death has caused regret throughout the town. Mr Holcombe was about 72 years of age and a widower.
In Morris 1870 Directory Mrs E Berry was described as ironmonger, plumber, brazier and tinplater, at High Street.
