Cause: an accident. Exeter and Plymouth Gazette, and Express and Echo 5 September 1887 FATAL ACCIDENT AT SANDFORD On Saturday afternoon a serious accident which ended in the narrow escape of a woman named Mrs. Sarah Dally, and proved fatal to an aged man named Mr. Peter Snow, an old Sandford Tradesman, happened on the Rose and Crown Hill. While Mr.Snow and Mrs. Dally stood talking on the hill a waggon, driven by Robert Chudleigh, in the employ of Mr. Norrish of Sandford, came up the hill behind a trap, and in trying to pass on the spot where the persons stood, came into collision. The horses by some means started. The waggon swayed, and thrust Mr. Snow close to the wall, where he remained jammed by the waggon till the driver could secure the horses' heads and remove the waggon. In jumping from the waggon, Chudleigh dislocated his shoulder and was yesterday conveyed to the Devon and Exeter Hospital, and detained. Mr. Snow on being extricated was carried home in an exhausted condition, where he fell into a state of unconsciousness and died about four hours afterwards, from the shock. Mr. L. Powne who examined the body, was unable to find any marks sufficient to account for death. Mrs Dally escaped with a few bruises. The shafts of the trap were completely smashed. An inquest will be held on the body of Mr. Snow following a post-mortem examination. Mr.H.W.Gould, Deputy Coroner, held an inquest at the Lamb Inn, Sandford. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death, in which the coroner fully concurred. |
