Note on Husband: Charles PICKETT
Charles was captured, probably during the fall of France, and spent the rest of the war in a POW camp, where an injury playing football left him with a crooked arm. His wartime experience seems to have taken quite a toll on him. After the break up of his marriage he lost his way. He was a drifter and sometimes had nowhere to live. He was a bricklayer, and often lived on the sites where he was working. For a period after the war he was self-employed, with a team working for him. On Fridays he would go down the pub with his men, take off his working cap, replace it with a bowler, and pay the men their wages!2
