OBITUARY

Mr. H.J.Cornish at Crediton

The funeral of Mr. H.J.Cornish, of 2 Grove Terrace, Crediton took place at Crediton Cemetery on Wednesday [May 5th] after a service at the Parish Church. Mr. Cornish died at his residence the previous Saturday [May 1st]. He had been proprietor of Crediton Motor Works for about 35 years, and had taken an active interest in the town’s activities until his illness. Mr. Cornish was an area officer of the special police, Crediton Section, a member of the British Legion, Crediton Chamber of Commerce, Crediton Motor Club, Unity Lodge No 1332, Crediton, and Unity Mark Lodge, No 783 of Freemasons. He leaves a widow and a son.

The vicar, the Rev. F.D.M Richards officiated at the choral service, assisted by the rector of Cheriton Fitzpaine, the Rev. A. Tamsett Leach, a personal friend. The churchyard was lined by personnel of the special police and the Crediton Fire Brigade, members of the Unity Lodge and Unity Mark Lodge. Mrs. F.Ash was the organist and hymns were “There is a land of pure delight,” and “they whose course on earth is o’er.” Psalm 23 and the Nunc Dimittis were chanted.

In Dec 1916, Henry John Cornish, aged 31, part proprietor of of the Crediton Motor Garage, having been passed for general military service was given a one month temporary exemption. (Final)
