| Professor Emeritus Fred Cornish, who was Head of Department between 1967-1977 has died, aged 89. Fred came to York as Professor in 1967 and was Head of Department from then until 1977. He was Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University between 1975 and 1981; this included a period as Acting Vice-Chancellor in 1978. Fred's main mathematical interest was General Relativity, on which he gave a popular third-year option. He was a model of academic life for younger staff, who held him in great esteem and affection, and was much admired for his integrity, selflessness and sense of fair play. |

3 children Frederick was a junior lecturer in maths at Oxford in 1953-54. His doctoral thesis The mathematical form and physical content of unified field theories derived from a variational principle was submitted in 1954. Was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of British Columbia in 1954-56. Did his National Service from 1956-1959. In 1959 was appointed lecturer in Applied Maths at Leeds University. He became Senior Lecturer at Leeds in 1965 and was appointed to the Chair of Mathematics at York University beginning his appointment in March 1967. He continued to teach the MSC course at Leeds in 1967-68. York Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University between 1975 and 1981 Acting Vice-Chancellor in 1978
In 2008 he was Professor Emeritus in Maths at the University of York
