Railway Fatality
At Prince Alfred Hospital Tuesday an inquest was commenced on the body of John Huxtable, a railway guard, who died in the institution on Monday morning from the effects of injuries received on the 9th instant at the Sutherland Railway Station. He was 40 years of age, a married man and had lived in Samuel Street, St Peters, with his wife and six children. On Thursday afternoon last he was in charge of a train of 24 coal trucks, which was proceeding from Como to Sydney, and prior to going down the hill, the train was brought to a standstill. Huxtable then proceeded to pin down the brakes of the trucks. The train was again started, and while deceased was standing on the lever brake of one of the trucks, he somehow slipped and his right leg was jammed between the wheel and the lever. As a result a nasty lacerated wound was inflicted below the knee. He was soon removed to the Prince Alfred Hospital, where he was admitted and died as stated. Dr. Challards stated that death was due to blood poisoning, consequent upon the injury to the leg. The inquiry was then adjourned till this morning at 10 o'clock for the production of another witness.
After John's death Gertrude was left a widow with 6 children. Her brother-in-law Ernest arrived to provide some help , and Gertrude subsequently married him. They then moved to Western Australia.
