| The Western Times. Friday May 4th 1901 FUNERAL OF THE LATE MR. R.HOOKER. The funeral of Mr. Richard Hooker of Prospect Park, and formerly of the firm of Misses Hamlin and Hooker, costumiers, of Exeter, took place at the Higher Cemetery yesterday. Mr. Hooker belonged to an influential Exeter family, although it is said that his parents were so poor that they could not give him a liberal education, but that he enjoyed a good preparatory training through the kindness lof his uncle, the Chamberlain of Exeter. He claimed to be the only male descendant of the famous author of “Ecclesiastical Polity”. His grandfather was Chief Magistrate of Exeter, and his great grandfather represented the city in Parliament in the reigns of Edward IV, Richard III and Henry VII. Mr. Hooker was a Congregationalist, and until recently was Treasurer of the Southernhay Church. He was a Freemason, being an immediate Past Master of St. John the Baptist Lodge, No. 39. Deceased was buried in the same grave as his wife, and dthe officiating minister was the Pastor of the Southernhay Congregational Church, The Rev. Herbert Arnold. At the graveside the hymn “Days and moments quickly flying” was sung. The chief mourners were the following:-- Mr. and Mrs Lewis A. Wills , Mr. James Hooker and Miss Hooker, Mr. Caleb Hooker and Miss Maria Hooker, Mr. and Mrs. George Weeks, Mrs William and Sam Berry, Mr Hubert Berry and Mr. Herrin. The following Freemasons also attended:-- [There follows of list of 17 named Freemasons, of interest to our family being J.F.Ralling, Octavius Ralling and maybe T.Pitts. ] Others present were the Revs W.J.Rowlands, R.W.Row, F.J.Morrish, J.C.Howells, and Messrs. C.Baker, [et al, with a further23 names, of whom F.J.Cornish is of relevance] The coffin, which was of polished oak with brss mountings, and contained an inner shell bore the following inscription:-- RICHARD HOOKER, Died 20th May, 1901. Aged 64. Floral tributes were sent from the following:-- The children, St. John the Baptist Lodge, Pastor and Deacons of Southernhay, the Mayor of Exeter, Mrs. Parham ( Kingston), Mrs, F,G.Wills and family, Mr and Mrs F.J.Commin and family...[senders of a further 7 floral tributes were listed. Messrs J. Hayman and Co., 81 Queen Street, were the undertakers. |
