Known as Stanley, he went to Blundells School. He married, then separated. He worked in Customs and Excise. In 1911 he and his wife were living in 48 Monks Road, Heavitree. He later lived in Scotland, and died in Brighton.
He was a talented rugby player. He played in the position of Lock and played for the following teams: Exeter, London Devonians, London Civil Service, Liverpool Obs and Harlequins as well as for Devon and Lancashire county teams. He played 12 matches for England between 13/1/1906 v Wales and 21/3/1908 v Scotland. In this time he captained 1 game for England, on 1/1/1908 v France.
