HOOKER STATUE AT EXETER
The white marble statue of Richard Hooker placed in Exeter Cathedral Green was unveiled by the Bishop yesterday after a special service in which all the music was of the period of Hooker’s life. The statue is the gift of Mr. Richard Hooker, a native of the city now living at Weston-super-Mare (whose original anonymous offer of a thousand guineas for the work was accepted by the Dean and Chapter) and a descendant of Hooker’s uncle, first chamberlain of Exeter. It is 7 ft high, the work of Mr. Alfred Drury A.R.A, and stands on a pedestal of grey granite from Messrs Easton’s quarries at Blackingstone, Moretonhampstead. The Bishop, addressing the congregation from the Cathedral, said Hooker was one of those great personalities round whom great movements and great institutions almost invariably embodied themselves, and who stood as the lasting embodiment and characteristic, in some degree, of the spirit that cleaved to those institutions in perpetuity. “Judicious” King James I called him, but the word had changed its meaning, and would best be represented today by “judicial”. – The unveiling was performed in the presence of the donor and members of his family.
Exeter Flying Post 26 October 1907
Accompanying Robert Hooker at the unveiling were Lady Hooker ( wife of Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, of Kew fame), Mrs D. Hooker (widow of Daniel Cragg Hooker), and the Misses Hooker from Exmouth - probably Clara Alice and Winifred Ellen Hooker.
Mr. Robert Hamlyn Hooker, who has died at the age of 87 at Weston-super-Mare was a native of Exeter, and deserves to be remembered by Exonians. It was due to his generosity that the statue of Richard Hooker, the author of the “Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity” , and one of the greatest church controversialists of his time was placed in the Cathedral Green. Mr. R.Hooker was a direct descendant of John Hooker, Chamberlain of the City, and uncle of Richard Hooker. John Hooker was the author of “The History of Exeter,” and his portrait hangs in the Guildhall, while Richard Hooker, the noted ecclesiastic, was born at Heavitree.
Devon and Exeter Gazette, 11 November 1913.
THE ADULTERATION OF GROCERIES is the title of a pamphlet written by Mr. Robert H. Hooker, grocer of Magdalene Rd., Mount Radford. Mr. Hooker uses simple tests to ascertain the purity of the articles he sells. Of these tests he gives a good account, and we recommend the subject to the attention of families.
