Note on Husband: John ROE
On 13 December 1723 John and James Rowe of Uffculme swore the Loyalty Oath before Bampfylde Rodd and Thomas Carew, at Colestock, Feniton. This may have been our John. It was undoubtedly the same family. Loyalty Oaths were imposed by the Hanoverian George in response to continuing threats from Jacobism. Devon and Cornwall were particularly strong Jacobite counties, and at the time there was much unrest as those engaged in the cloth trade were suffering economically, and may have been eager recruits for Jacobite rebellion.
