| 369 Commercial Yard, Mile End Old Town Aswell as wife and three children there is a James White aged 77 from Devon, living with the family, described as Grandfather. It is impossible for there to be an entire generation between William and this James White, so it must be assumed that this was William's father. His age does not correspond well with the age of the father in the 1851 census, which gives us another reason to suspect that this may not be the correct William for our White family. |

I(t is possible that William worked with William H. Loud, - a butcher who in 1861 was in West Street, Axminster. The Whites were living nearby, Maria as a servant just a few doors away. In 1871 there was a William White in the employ of William Loud who had by then moved to Taunton. He was a butcher born in Axminster, but his date of birth doesn't match our William's, though it is close. By 1881 this William was a Master Butcher in Bermondsey, employing 1 boy. By now his age is a beter match for our William. The details recorded for the census returns from 1881 are for this Bermondsey butcher, with the caveat that it may not be the correct William.8
