DIED ON CHRISTMAS DAY

RETIRED LICENSE HOLDER’S END AT
ARUNDEL MANSIONS

The sudden death on Christmas Day of a retired licensed victualler formed the subject of an inquiry at Fulham Coroner’s Court on Tuesday. The deceased was Mr. Louis Adolph Achard, aged 58 years, lately living at 8 Arundel Mansions, Kelvedon Road, Fulham.
Emily Achard, the widow, said that her husband was a retired licensed victualleer. He had had a bad cough for some time past, getting it every winter. Mr. Achard had not been attended by a doctor for the last three or four years. He had been taking cough mixture which he bought at Boots’, the chemists. It was called “Pectoral Balsam”. The night before his death deceased was in his usual health and complained of nothing. He made no complaint during the night. She woke up the next morning at a quarter to nine. She called hime but he did not answer. She called him again in a quarter of an hour, he made no answer, and she found he was dead. She sent the porter for the doctor.
John Sullifant, porter at Arundel Mansions, said that he had known Mr. Achard for three years and three months. He was apparently a healthy and sober man. Witness last saw him on Wednesday afternoon. He was called at nine o’clock on Christmas morning by Mrs. Achard. He found Mr. Achard dead and was very much surprised. He was satisfied that it was a natural death.
Dr. Ehrlich of 89 Dawes Road, Fulham, said that he was called at Christmas morning at ten o’clock. Death had occurred about an hour previously. Witness had examined the body and found it that of a very stout man. The heart was large and weighed one pound 15 ounces. The normal weight would be 13 ounces. There was fatty degeneration. The liver weighed six pounds seven ounces; the normal weight would be sixty ounces. The cause of death was syncope following extensive heart disease.
A verdict of “Death from natural causes” was returned.
