In 1878 John Jackling was examined at the United Methodist Assembly of Free Churches in Sheffield as part of the examination of young ministers. In July 1879 John K Jackling represented the Devonport Circuit at the United Methodist Free Churches Annual assembly in Monkwearmouth, Sunderland. His results in the Fourth Examination of Methodist Theology were announced.
