Migration to Canada: According to Marion Kilcup as written in her book ,"The Descendents of Thomas Downing Sr. and the History of Lime in the Beachville Area": Thomas, his wife Elizabeth and children, Elizabeth Ann, Thomas Jr. John and baby George "set out on the long, arduous journey, accompanied by John Dark and his brother Edwin, and I believe, a brother of Elizabeth, who settled in the Petrolia area (at least his descendents are still around 1995.) There were a total of 35 passengers. The crossing took three months-longer than baby George had lived in England. John Dark was a part-time farm labourer for Thomas as well as being employed with Thomas at Malenshute, in the lime industry. The family arrived in the late summer of 1851. They took up residence in Woodstock, on Simcoe Street at the corner of Perry.
