He was withdrawn from the RN on 9 Sep 1922 at parents' request. His father made the request and the officer was given permission to resign on 19 Aug 1922.
His father was recorded as A.W.Heard Esq., "Gainford", Caeran Raod, Newport, Monmouth.
Roland had
an important position in Jones, Heard & Co. He was collector and keeper of the family history, records
and memorabilia, the first of the family to do so. He married and had 2 children, and lived in
comfortable style at Fashoda House, Southerndown, near Bridgend, South Wales. Around 1978 he was
badly injured in a motor accident and had to retire to a quiet simple life. Tragedy was added in the death
of their eldest son. Roland's condition deteriorated and he died in 1983 or so. His wife Betty died about
a year later (Ref: Family correspondence until 1983). Their home, Fashoda House was originally built by
Thomas Rowe (1834-1923) of Southerndown, who was the great grandfather of Roland Heard’s
daughter-in-law and had been passed down in that family, but was sold by auction in 1945 where
Roland purchased it. It still remains in the family. Roland Heard and his wife Betty had two sons, of
whom the eldest tragically died in a mountain climbing accident in the Himalaya mountains on the
descent after having reached the summit of a mountain peak that had only ever been successfully
ascended once before (Ref: James Heard correspondence, 2022).
