In 1851 Thomas is visiting a Clotworthy family, in Bethnal Green. He describes himself as a whitesmith. In 1861 Thomas appears to be a "Silk Mercer's Assistant" working and living in Wigmore Street, for the original Debenhams, where William Debenham is described as a Silk Mercer, and the census return runs to two and a half pages of the enumerator's book with assistants, warehousemen, dressmakers and porters etc.
