On 21 June 1943 Lewis Osborne was sentenced to 6 months imprisonment at Devon Assize, for robbery with violence. 17 year-old Doris left Crediton Cinema at 11pm. Osborne caught up with her, spoke to her and walked with her to Fordton Barton. She refused to tell him her name, and avoided his attempt to kiss her. Whereupon he knocked her on the jaw and she fell to the floor and screamed. He stole her handbag. The Judge acknowledged the Osborne had not used extreme violence, but robbery with violence was a serious charge and he would have to go to prison.
Osborne attributed his behaviour to an excess of drink.
he has joined the army at the outbreak of war, had served in France, then had been evacuated from Dunkirk. He was afterwards discharged as being unfit for military service, and had had a nervous breakdown. He had since been working as a casual labourer.
