10603, White Plains, Westchester, New York, USA Mother Mary Ethelburge Adames, a member of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, died peacefully on July 15, 2001 at Good Counsel Convent. She was born on November 29, 1905 (sic)in Guernsey, Channel Islands, the daughter of John and Adah Adames. Mother Ethelburge entered the Sisters of the Divine Compassion in 1922 and professed her final vows in 1930. She graduated from Good Counsel College in 1944 with a B.Sc. degree in Biology. Mother Ethelburge taught at Good Counsel High School before being elected to serve in leadership in the congregation from 1951-1969 - twelve of those years as President of the community. During these years she was responsible for the tremendous growth of the campus, overseeing the building of the new wing on the convent, a new gymnasium, and two buildings for Good Counsel College. In 1969 she was appointed procurator at Good Counsel and served in that position until 1988. In 1981 she assumed the role of moderator of the Guild of Our Lady of Good Counsel and served in that capacity until her death.. "Through the years Mother Mary Ethelburge's graciousness and generosity drew people together to work effectively in service to others. We are grateful to have shared her gifts of friendship, practical compassion and keen human understanding for so long," said Sr. Alice Feeley, President of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion. Mother Mary Ethelburge is survived by her cousins, Shirley Davis and Elizabeth Marston of Bournemouth, England and her religious sisters of the Divine Compassion. Visitation hours will be at Good Counsel Convent on Monday, July 16 and Tuesday, July 17 - 2:00 to 5:00 and 7:00 to 9:00. The funeral will be on Wednesday, July 18 at 10:00 in the Chapel of the Divine Compassion with burial in the chapel crypt. The MCMAHON, LYON & HARTNETT FUNERAL HOME is handling the arrangements.
