Joined the police in Exeter in 1954. He was promoted to inspector and joined the regional crime squad in Torquay. In 1970 he went to Barnsley as detective superintendent then was promoted to Detective Chief Superintendent in Bradford and Leeds, He finished his career as assistant chief constable west yorkshire metropolitan police - Yorkshire Ripper and Bradford City Football Ground fire. John retired from the force in 1986 and then worked for MI5.
In 1990, he set up a residential home in Okehampton with his family and became chairman of Okehampton Community College and chairman of Okehampton Football Club.
In 1986 he received an OBE for his public service. He moved from Topsham to Okehampton in 2019.
