CAR SMASH DEATH
INJURED WOMAN’S 35 MILE
JOURNEY TO PURLEY.

STEERING WHEEL MISHAP
________________________
The inquest on Mrs Margaret Daisy Fey (22), of Skipton Street, Southwark, who was fatally injured in a road accident at Iden Green, Kent, on Sunday, June 16th and died in the Mayday Road Hospital on July 30th, was continued by the Croydon Coroner (Dr. H. B. Jackson) at the Coroner’s Court on Tuesday.
On June 15th Mrs. Fey was one of a party of eight adults and two young children who visited Sutton Vallence to see friends. They took a run further to Benenden, and were making for
Iden Green, when, at a sharp bend by Quarry Woods, the car left the road.
CRASHED THROUGH GATE
The car crashed through a gate, and overturned in a field. The Cranbrook ambulance took most of the injured to Hastings Hospital, but Mrs. Fey and a girl were picked up by an unknown motorist believed to be from Croydon. When he left it was understood he was going to the nearest hospital. As a fact he took Mrs. Fey to Purley War Memorial Hospital, a distance of about 35 miles. From there she was removed by ambulance to Croydon (Mayday Road) Hospital, where she died.
P.S. T Connell, of Kent County Constabulary, put in a plan of the scene of the accident. The road was 16 feet wide and level. There was a very dangerous bend where the accident occurred, in fact witness considered it one of the most dangerous bends in Kent although there were no warning signs. When witness saw the car after the accident two of the wheels were broken. The driver, Mr.Moyce, said the accident was due to a locked steering wheel and witness did not hear him say that it was due to a wheel breaking.
Miss Florence Palmer, recalled, said that after the accident a private motorist offered to take her and Mrs. Fey to Hospital. On the way, however, they came to Purley Cottage Hospital, where they stopped.
In answer to the coroner, Miss Palmer said that at the time of the accident she formed the
opinion that the accident was due to the wheel breaking.
SHOT ACROSS THE ROAD
Mr. Alec Vine, of Benenden, said he was walking along the road in the direction of his home when the accident occurred. He saw the car coming towards him on its near side and after it passed witness turned to watch it as he was sure it could not get round the corner at the very fast pace it was going. Witness estimated the speed of the car at 30 miles an hour. As it took the bend, the car shot across the road, appeared to skid, struck the gate and overturned into the field. Witness went back and rendered what help he could.
By the Coroner: In witness’ opinion the accident was caused by the speed of the car. He did not see either of the wheels break on the road and there were no spokes on the road after the accident. The car did not appear to slow on the bend.
Mr. Beyden Moore, also of Benenden, who was walking with the previous witness, gave a similar account of the accident, which, he said, was due to “sheer speed and the dangerous
nature of the corner”.
“A CRACKING NOISE”
Mr. George Moyce, of Lance Street, S.E.1, a passenger in the car, said the first he knew of the accident was when there was a cracking noise from the front of the car. Then there was a bang, and the next witness knew was when he found himself lying in a field.
Mr. Stephen Bowcher, of Bermondsey, the owner of the car, said he lent the car to Mr. James Moyce for the day and it was quite “roadworthy.”
The driver of the car, Mr. J. Moyce, of Lance Street, S.E. said he took the bend at about 15 miles an hour, not knowing that it was a sharp bend. Suddenly there was a cracking noise and the steering wheel was wrenched out of his hand. The car tipped up and witness remembered nothing else.
By the Coroner: Witness thought that the accident was due to the wheel collapsing while the heavily laden car was going round the sharp bend.
The jury returned a verdict of “Death from Misadventure.”
