Note on Marriage

Decree Nisi pronounced in February 1916.

Note on Husband: Theophilus Rodick WILLING

In 1901 Theo was a boarding pupil at Kings College, South Road, Taunton. He graduated from Oxford in 1905. He seems to have gone immediately to Hyderabad, India. He returned from India, where he had been a Tutor, on the SS Oroya, embarking at Colombo, and disembarking at Plymouth December 1908.

He was made a Deacon in 1909 at St Aidan's College, Birkenhead.

He was ordained priest in 1910 at Chester Cathedral. He was assistant curate at Runcorn, Cheshire, for about a year. His mother was living in Runcorn in 1911. On 17 April 1912 he sailed on the Karina to the Gold Coast, Africa, where he worked as a Missionary for three months. He inherited the Living of North Hill, Launceston, worth £500, from his father, taking up the position in 1913, after his first marriage. The scandal associated with his marriage and alleged desertion of his wife blew up at the end of 1913, and was reported in 1914. He returned to North Hill, where he remained Rector until 1967.

He divorced in 1916.

In Nov 1932 he was charged with failing to stop his motor car when urged so to do by the police, and failing to stop after an accident, in Roborough. He claimed that he thought the policeman was a bandit. He was fined £10, and banned from driving for 6 months. The magistrates said they could not believe his excuses, and that was a disgraceful thing to say of a clergyman. This was reported nationally.

In 1966 he publicly condemned the North Hill Church organist for the high fees he charged to play at weddings and funerals.

On 13 June 1967 he had been Rector of North Hill for 54 years. After a spell in hospital he determined to retire in July 1967. The occasion was marked with a special service.

Note on Wife: Annie Hunter STAFFORD

She was a church worker and Sunday school teacher, and a popular amateur singer, who competed successfully at local music festivals, and formed a choir from Sunday school pupils that won prizes in the Blackpool Festival.

From October 1914 until their marriage after her divorce from Rodick in 1916, she lived with James Forrester, and bore his child in 1915.
