In 1851 John was an apprentice with Druggist and Grocer Joseph Copeland, at High Street, March, Cambridgeshire. As well as Mr & Mrs Copeland their five sons and a daughter, there were three apprentrices including John, three domestic servants, and a 20 year-old teacher whose status is not clear.

By 1861 he had qualified as a druggist, and a boarder, he was working for Joseph Copeland's widow, Elizabeth, now described as Chemist and Druggist, still in the High Street in March. Several of the Copeland sons and the daughter were assistants or druggists in the business too. There was a grocer in the household, and one servant, a cook.
