Note on Husband: Wilfred John HEARD

After their marriage Wilfred and Sadie's first home together was the flat over the woolshop adjoining the cinema in East Street, Crediton - the Cinema Flat, where they are found in the1949 & 1951 Voters Lists. They soon move to 13 East Street, when Sadie's brother moves out to Exmouth. The family move from East Street to Church View on 1st January 1964. They move to 10 Buller Road in 1968

Note on Wife: Sadie Clarice PITTS

In 1916 Sadie was born at Higher Town Farm, Lapford.

In 1921 Sadie, 5, was with her brother Lewis Laurence,8, and parents Nicholas Samuel Pitts, 36, a farmer and mother Emma Kathleen Pitts,Wife,43, at West Sandford. The children were at school.

In 1923 Sadie and brother Laurie Pitts, and Leslie Cole were all registered at Clayhidon School in April. The Pitts family were living with, and maybe employed as assistants by their in-laws, Edwin and Anna (née Pitts) Cole, and their children at Gollick Park Farm, Clayhidon.

In 1930-1931 Sadie and Laurie were living in Crediton with their parents, Nicholas and Kate had the sweet shop at the top of Bowden Hill, next door to the Kings Arms - 48 Park Street.

In December 1938 Sadie was living with her parents, her brother Laurie and a blind Mrs Willmett at Redhill Cottages, Chulmleigh Road, Morchard Bishop. Neighbours included the Squires family and the Edwards family. A fire in the thatch destroyed the row of cottages and the Pitts lost everything.

In September 1939 Nicholas, Emma Kathleen with blind incapacitated Ellen Willmott,76, incapacitated Annie Vigers, 60, and private nurse Elsie Perkins, 86, were living at Alma Cottage, Morchard Bishop. Meanwhile Sadie, 23, was living at 8 Council House, Morchard Bishop. She was described as incapacitated, and was in the house with Beatrice Squire, aged 26, and widowed George Squire, 64, a quarry worker. Laurie was living in the household with his wife to be, Audrey Wheeler, in East Street, Crediton. It is likely that these arrangements were prompted by the loss of their home in the fire nine months earlier.
