Note on Marriage

Witnesses at the marriage were John Morrish, Albert Heard and Ethel Lena Turner

Note on Husband: Walter HEARD (1)

A painter called Heard appears in the Berry's wage book for Friday Nov 5th, 1915 earning 54/6 for six days work. This was almost certainly Grandad Walter Heard. He, his son Bill, and Grandson Ray worked for the successor company Berry & Vincent.

Walter was away on military service on the 1918 Voters List, but registered at 7 East Street. An Ann Pike appears to be at the same address. Jessie would not necessarily have been recorded because of the narrow voter qualifications. In the 1935 voters list Walter and Jessie were at 46 East Street, and Ethel Pollard was next door at 44. In the 1939 Voters List, Walter, Jessie, Bill, Wilfred,Den and Margery were at home at Vine Cottage, 63 East Street. They are still at Vine Cottage in 1951. Dennis Elstone was living there too. Walter and Jessie were living at 28b Mill Street when he died.

Note on Husband: Walter HEARD (2)

Whilst on active service in Battersea was absent from duty from 8.40 on 10 June 1919 to 8.40 on 11 June 1919 when he reported, He was confined to barracks for 3 days as punishment.

Note on Husband: Walter HEARD (3)

Pte Walter Heard passed the Army Trade Test for Painter on 22 Sep 1917 at Woolwich Army Recruiting Area

Note on Husband: Walter HEARD (4)

After being transferred to the Army Service Corps MT depot, he appears to have been posted to a number of bases - Grove Park, Lee, Bawdsey, Camberwell, Bulford, Battersea.

Note on Wife: Jessie Ann TURNER

After Walter's death my memory is of Jessie mainly living at 46 East Street. She was living at the Manse, Hollocombe, Winkleigh, with daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Rob Benson when she died.
