Walter served in the Royal Marines in WWI. He was in the trenches, where he got trench-foot and, after recuperation, ended up somewhere beyond civilisation Mudros (aka Moudros, Greece/Turkey theatre of war) as part of the Gallipoli fiasco. Walter also served as Special Constable for many years. He was Church Warden at St James, Jacobstowe.
In the War he contracted something like campylobacter, that was never properly diagnosed. He returned home with a stomach ulcer: treatment then was to remove part of his stomach. Ironically he was a notoriously fussy eater. He would never eat fish or chicken skin as he felt it was unclean. He was scrupulous about food hygiene. I doubt he was able to practice his food hygiene in sunny Mudros. I have a postcard Walter sent home showing part of the bay and a few tents and nothing but dust/sand a far cry from glorious verdant Devon.
