Following the death of her mother - Elizabeth Parsons Collingwood nee Slee - the family were split up as their father could not cope alone with bringing up a young family.
Dorothy was sent to live with her father's brother (Richard Collingwood) and his family. Sadly she was never allowed to see her siblings again although apparently she did meet her brother. Leonard, much later in her life when she was married. Although nobody seems to know why, it seems the meetings did not go well and they never saw each other again.
Dorothy always maintained that her sister, Evelyn, had died soon after her birth although this was clearly not the case. Maybe this is what she was told when she was sent away. Sadly, as a result, they never met and Dorothy's early life remained a mystery that was never discussed.
It also would seem that after she had gone to live with her Uncle she also never saw her father again - maybe because the Collingwood's considered him a bit of a 'black sheep'. It seems ironic that she was left £1 in her father's will!
