Death | 21 Jun 1928 (age 27) | Exeter Canal |
Cause: drowning Address: 22 Church Road, St Thomas, Exeter In about May of 1928 Mary suffered a nervous breakdown. She continued to be treated by her GP, but appeared to be recovering. Then on Thursday 21 June Mary went shopping. When her husband returned home from work she had gone missing. Her body was found floating in the Exeter Ship Canal midway between Salmon Pool Bridge and the Double Locks on Monday 25 June. An inquest was held at the Double Locks Hotel on 26 June. The coroner determined that there was no evidence as to how Mary had drowned, and whilst acknowledging that it was possible she took her own life, she may have been picking flowers on the bank and fallen in. An open verdict of " Found Drowned" was returned. Mary was aged 27. |
In 1911 Mary was living with uncle and aunt Albert and Mary Greenslade in Pinhoe. On Tuesday September 15 1925 a row of thatched cottages at Pinhoe, including the one where Mary was living with her niece Mary Rowe, were almost destroyed by fire, and the occupants were made homeless. Among the things lost in the fire were a number of wedding presents, given in anticipation of the marriage of niece Mary to Leonard Strong. The loss was made good through subscriptions collected by local newspapers and others.
