Death | 21 Jun 1928 (age 27) | Exeter Canal |
Cause: drowning Address: 22 Church Road, St Thomas, Exeter In about May of 1928 Mary suffered a nervous breakdown. She continued to be treated by her GP, but appeared to be recovering. Then on Thursday 21 June Mary went shopping. When her husband returned home from work she had gone missing. Her body was found floating in the Exeter Ship Canal midway between Salmon Pool Bridge and the Double Locks on Monday 25 June. An inquest was held at the Double Locks Hotel on 26 June. The coroner determined that there was no evidence as to how Mary had drowned, and whilst acknowledging that it was possible she took her own life, she may have been picking flowers on the bank and fallen in. An open verdict of " Found Drowned" was returned. Mary was aged 27. |

In 1881 George was a servant for John Northam at Middlecott, Rackenford. By 1891 he was back with his parents and was working as a Waggoner. In 1901 he was at Bampton with Emma, his father-in-law and the three children, working as a Carter on a farm, living at Hockford Cottage. In 1911 George had written his entire name in reverse, as well as that of son George Henry so they appear in the census as Rowe G Henry. They were at Beare Village, near Broadclyst. Emma was in the asylum at Exminster, and the only children were Ellen, Henry and John. Henry had recorded that he has been married 15 years, that 4 children were born, and 4 were still living. The enumerator crossed this line out. It is the line that is generally associated with the wife of the house, so this may mean that Emma has died, or is known to have left. Henry recorded his status as married, not widowed.
