In 1841 it is likely that John was working as a servant at Manor Mill, Chipstable, for miller Bishop Stone and his family. In 1851 John was a labourer lodging with labourer Robert Penold and his family at Sanders Barnstable, Huishchampflower, Dulverton. In 1861 John and Mary Ann were living at 1, Daniels, Chipstable, with children Jane and Mary, John's mother Sarah, his sister Sarah Ann and his niece Elizabeth were also living there.
In 1871 the family were living at Church House, Raddington, Somerset.
In 1881 John, Mary and children John and Emma were living at Corner Cottages, Bampton.
In 1891 John and Mary Ann were living with children Mary, John and Emma, and grandchildren Johnny and Lucy, in High Street, Bampton.
In 1901 74 year old widowed John was living with his daughter Emma , her husband George Rowe, and children Ellen,4, George,2, and Mary 8 months, at Hockford Cottage, Bampton.
In 1911 John was living alone at Lea Cottage, Hockworthy, his age recorded as 84, a former far, labourer.
