He passed through all the grades in the office, and executed many important missions on the Continent before rising to be principal partner in 1880, on the death of and Managing Director with Jones, and the firm was renamed Jones, Heard and Co. He came to be known as The Grand Old Man of Newport. In top hat and frock coat with buttonhole, he went to his office every day. 300 days a year he is either in his office or attending to business elsewhere.

His business trip to Canada and the USA in 1865 was instrumental in extending company affairs, and his detailed account of this trip, dictated many years
later from memory, is now in the Public Archives of Nova Scotia in Halifax and the National Archives of Canada in Ottawa and makes good reading. On that occasion a barque being built in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, was named the 'W.E. Heard' after him.
