Mr W.E.HEARD 102 TO-MORROW
In Excellent Health and Still Active
Mr. William Esau Heard, J.P., Newport, will celebrate his 102nd birthday tomorrow.
He is in excellent health and still active, and though prevented by the severe weather from going out, gets about the house every day. Tomorrow all members of his family who live within reasonable distance are to assemble at his house and greet him, and he is looking forward to the reunion with eagerness. Mr. Heard has not visited the office of his firm (Messrs. Jones, Heard, and Co.) for some time, but his interest in the business has not flagged. He entered the firm as office-boy in 1849. He was a founder of Newport Chamber of Commerce and was its first representative on the Newport Harbour Commission. He has been Consular representative at Newport for Russia, Belgium, Turkey, Uruguay and Peru, and was for 28 years Consular Agent for the United States of America.DECORATED BY KING ALBERT On his 100th birthday Mr. Heard was decorated by the late King Albert of the Belgians. It will be remembered that a few years ago he wrote in the Western Mail his reminiscences of old days in Newport, in which he recalled the days of the sailing ship, the growth of the docks, and the time when the River Usk was alive with shipping, and all the repairing yards were always working at full pressure.
1 Dec 1885
William Esau Heard and Charles Wesley Ingram, trading as G.W.Jones, Heard & Co, merchants, ship and insurance brokers, and general commission agents dissolved the partnership.
William was presented to both the Prince of Wales and the Duke of York on their visits to Newport.
In the days before the telephone network was introduce William had his own private telephone line between his Newport and Cardiff offices.
On the occasion of his 100th birthday in 1935 he was attended by a deputation headed by the Mayor of Newport. They made a unique presentation of an album containing the signatures of 750 worthies representing every phase of life in Newport and Monmouthshire. The album contained too an illuminated addresswhich paid tribute to his ling lifetime of public service. The frontispiece is a portrait of Mr Heard, photographed in his garden a few days earlier, wearing his white top hat, in which he was well known in the town, along with his buttonhole.
The Address.
1835-1935
To WILLIAM ESAU HEARD J.P.
On the occasion of the one hundredth anniversary of your birthday, we, whose signatures are collected in this album, representing the civic, professional and business activities of the town and port of Newport, present to you this token of our friendship and esteem, and of our best wishes for your continued long life and health.
Since you entered the firm with which you are still associated, 85 years ago, Newport has seen many great developments which have raised it to the position of one of the leading ports in the country. The town and port has seen periods of prosperity and of depression and there are signs that it is today recovering slowly but surely from the great depression of the past few years.
The lord-lieutenant of the county of Monmouth, the high-sheriff of the County of Monmouth, the Mayor and corporation of Newport, local and county magistrates, his Majesty's Collector of Customs and Excise, members of the Consular Corps, of which you were for over 35 years an honoured member; corporation officials and police, shipowners and shipbrokers, your business associates over very many years; the Newport Docks manager and his staff, and workers at the Newport Docks, members of the Newport Chamber of Commerce, of which you were one of the founders: lawyers, doctors, and businessmen, your fellow workers for the Royal Gwent Hospital, your fellow members of the Devon and Cornwall Society, members of the Monmouthshire County Club and of the Newport Athletic Club, the Newport Pilotage Board and the pilots of the port of Newport, and others in all walks of life join in this testimonial to the long and useful life you have led, with the development and prosperity of Newport always to the fore in your many and varied activities.
A blank page for the family to fill followed, and finally came page after page of autographs . The terms of the address indicate the wide scope of interests represented, but it should be added that the Bishop of Monmouth and the Mayors of Monmouth and Abergavenny also signed.
He played a leading role in the establishment of Newport's Eastern Dry Dock, and important step in the town's industrial history.

Interview with Mr W.E.Heard
Mr. William Esau Heard, J.P., doyen of the shipping and Consular life of Newport (with the activities of which he has been associated for 76 years), has given the Western Mail an interesting story of two of his sons. Those who know Mr. Heard, either personally or by repute will be glad to find that now, in his ninety-first year, he is still healthy and vigorous. He goes to his office (that of Jones, Heard & Co.) in Dock Street, Newport, every day with few lapses.
“Yesterday, (he said to a Western Mail representative) I was not here at the office. I was away gardening and cutting logs for our winter use. There is nothing like good healthy exercise, sawing wood and suchlike to keep one fit.”
“ I understand you have lately had good and interesting news about your youngest son, Leonard, who something a little over thirty years ago was one of the most accomplished Rugby three-quarters that Newport then possessed,” asked the Pressman.
“Yes (responded Mr. Heard), Leonard, whom is now 54 years old in 1896, finding the opportunities for development in the Old Country not quite as attractive as in new countries, left home for South Africa. After a stormy passage of nearly a month he landed in Cape Town in December 1896 and went up to Johannesburg in 1897.
“By good fortune and enterprise he became associated with Corner House, the great institution in Johannesburg which combines many of the features of our Royal Exchange, Baltic Exchange, and similar great institutions in London – the place where mining (gold and platinum), collieries, land investments, and suchlike are chiefly controlled. After serving in various grades he was elected to an important position which he still retains.
“That position, together with a number of good influences, enabled him a few years ago to acquire what is called in South Africa a “block” of land of 50,000 acres in the Rustenburg district. The Boers who migrated there from Natal in 1850 called it the “Garden of the Transvaal.”
“It was ordinary rough veldt land, not cultivated, when Leonard acquired it, but since he has had it he has devoted himself to its development and a few years ago succeeded in selling or leasing about 23,000 acres.
“But I ought to mention that as a compliment to me he named the estate “Northam”, after the village in North Devon where I was born (at Cross House) in 1835. It has now been found to be highly suitable for cotton growing, although, besides the successful cotton crops, large quantities of fruit are also grown there.
“Here is an extract from a Rand daily paper, which says: ‘Northam shows the way. Where cotton is grown under ideal conditions’. That spirit is being fostered by Leonard, and I think it is much to be commended in a young man like him: and, of course, what pleased me more than anything was that he should give the name of ‘Northam’, his dad’s native village, to his new estate.”
A Wealthy Man
“And he has done well there, has he?” was the question.
“Yes (responded Mr. Heard), he is a wealthy man but he does not say much about it. He married in Johannesburg, Miss Olive Bertha Fothergill, a daughter of the late Mr. George Fothergill, who was mayor of Newport in 1876, and who lived at Beechwood Park and built the big house there that the Newport Corporation years afterwards acquired as one of the public parks of the town. They have two sons and a daughter. One of the sons has lately gone back to South Africa after being educated at Marlborough College in this country. The other son is at Lancing College, also in this country, and the daughter is at a college in Johannesburg.
Wedding in Toronto
“Then what about your eldest son, Mr. Heard, there is something interesting to say about him I think?” said the Western Mail representative.
“My eldest son, Sidney (said Mr. Heard) who has a shipping business at Cardiff and who is also in business in London, where he lives, is on his way to Toronto to attend the wedding of his eldest son, Frank, a lad of about 25, who on his return from Patagonia became engaged to Miss McQueen, second daughter of Mr. McQueen, one of the Standard Oil magnates, who lives at Toronto.
“Frank served in the Air Force during the War and was shot in the legs. After he was demobilised and got well he was engaged by the Standard Oil Company to go to Peru seeking oil. From thence he went to Argentina and down into Patagonia, where he saw a good deal of the Welsh colonists. After being there two years he returned to this country where he met Miss McQueen, and they became engaged.
“Mr. McQueen has the control of the Canadian business of the Standard Oil Company. They are to be married on November 28.”
Julia and William celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1908.
