He was also South African Tennis Champion in 1899 The Rand Daily Mail, on 18 February, 1903, reported “Lawn Tennis …

For some years the Port Elizabeth Association has had a Cup, which is called the South African Challenge Cup, and at the last meeting, which was held in 1898, Leonard Heard went down from Johannesburg and won it, so that he is still the holder. He does not intend to defend it this year, but the Transavaal Lawn Tennis Association hope to send RWG Clarke, the present Wanderers’ Club Champion, and HR Eaton of Pretoria, to represent the Transvaal at the Port Elizabeth Tournament.”
