MAN WITH A KNIFE
Sensational Incident
Scene at an Office
Sensational affair in a Newport office was described to the borough magistrates, on Friday, when George Freeman of the SS. Hugo and Clara was charged with using violent and abusive language and threatening to stab Peter Charles Cessac at 107 Dock Street.
Mr. White, prosecuting, said the facts were few, but extraordinary. Prisoner called at the offices of Jones, Heard and Co., and saw the complainant who was Consular clerk. Freeman asked for his discharge book and was told that it was not there. Freeman then became very excited and violent, and used bad and abusive language, but later calmed down. Subsequently, however, he seemed to have been seized with a paroxysm of rage, and threatened to tear Cessac's stomach out. Prisoner pulled out a long knife from a sheath, but Mr. Melville Heard happened to be on the spot, and slammed the door, pushing the prisoner outside. He remained outside the offices for about half an hour, and behaved like a madman. Such conduct could not be tolerated.
Complainant bore out his advocate's statement. He was consular clerk to Mr. Arthur W. Heard, the German vice-consul. Prisoner entered the office and asked witness if he had his discharge book from a German boat. Witness replied in the negative, and prisoner then said, " I know better, and I mean to get it". Witness then said, " You must not talk like that, and you had better take your cap off." Prisoner refused to do so, and used violent and abusive language. Witness then told him to clear out, and prisoner became quiet. Subsequently Freeman went downstairs, but on seeing witness again he used violent threats, and declared he would open his stomach. Mr. Melville Heard then came on the scene, and pushed the door to on the man. On looking through the window witness saw prisoner with a knife in his hand. Freeman remained outside the office for 25 minutes, jumping about like a madman.
Mr. Melville Heard said he happened to be on the ground floor when prisoner came into the lobby swearing. Witness went forward to see what the trouble was, when, on Mr Cxxx coming behind him, prisoner produced a knife in a sheath. Prisoner seemed to be mad with rage.
P.C.Godwin received prisoner into custody. On being charged, prisoner said, " I did not mean anything when I lifted the knife. "
Prisoner alleged that complainant addressed him roughly, and told him to take off his cap. He supposed it got on his nerves. Prisoner was bound over to keep the peace for three months and was ordered to pay costs.
