The newly married couple went to California to settle in Riverside. There they acquired an orrange farm. Perhaps unsuccessfully, as they returned to Wales shortly after the birth of Freda. Soon afterwards, on his father's inheriting Blundeston Hall, they returned, more or less unwillingly we are told, to manage the Blundeston Hall estate. In 1916 the Blundeston property had to be sold by public auction. This was during the collapse of the economy during the first years of the First World War. Afterwards, Hardy and Florence Woods ("Gup" and "Grannie" to their grandchildren) lived successively in Paignton, Devon and Felixstowe Suffolk. |

Thomas Hardwick Woods (1863-1947) m.1892 Florence Emily Rose Heard (1863-1946?)Capt.Thomas Hardwick Woods, "Hardie", gent. of Blundeston Hall, Suffolk, and Capt.R.A., was the eldest son of Col.Thomas and Elizabeth (Hardwick) Woods. He was born 18 May 1863 in Llandaff and baptized On 17 June 1863 at St.John's Church, Cardiff, co.Glamorgan, with his parents recorded as Thomas and Elizabeth Higgins Woods. He was known as "Gup" to his children and grandchildren. He died 18 April 1947 at Paignton, Devon, and his will was proved at Bristol, 7 Oct.1947, by his son H.J.Woods, engineer, and his son-in-law E.R.Knight, farmer, the executors (effects valued at Pd.Stlg. 3,103.15s.5d.). He was educated at Morven College, and as a young man spent a year in Paris. For a time before his marriage he had a position in the Cardiff Estate Office of the Marquis of Bute as a steward in charge of special events. He was also a skilled horseman and used to ride point-to-point races for the Marquis of Bute which were keenly followed sporting events in which the competitors were not professional riders. Early on he joined the Royal Artillery as a Lieutenant and rose to Captain and brevet Major. In later years he was always known as Captain Woods. Soon after his marriage he left the army and with his wife moved briefly to Riverside California where they acquired an orange farm. The arrival from Liverpool and Queenstown on the ship ‘Germania’ in the United States at New York on 28 May 1892 of Thomas Hardwick Woods is recorded in Ellis Island records, and states that he was then married aged 29. His wife must have followed later. How successful his brief enterprise in California was is not recorded, but there is a memory that his wife did not like the life there having contracted some illness which she blamed on the climate. Their eldest child was born there in 1895. That same year he gave up his orange groves and returned to England at his father's request in order to take up residence in Blundeston Hall. Extensive renovations were required and these took more than a year, so until this was done he and his family at first lived in Llandaff before moving in to Blundeston Hall in 1896. He was appointed a Justice of the peace for co.Suffolk in 1897 and held that office for many years. He was an expert rider and polo player, and before he married he used to ride point to point races, riding mostly for the Marquis of Bute. In later years he was a frequent judge at equestrian events. 'Tagali', a surprise winner of the Derby in 1912, was trained in secret in his stables at Blundeston Hall. Family fortunes declined, and in 1916 Blundeston Hall and nearly all its contents had to be sold. Although too old to qualify for active service, Capt.Woods again joined the army in a domestic capacity during the first World War, as a dispatch rider. Having actually moved out of Blundeston Hall in 1914, Capt.Woods afterwards lived first at Felixstowe Suffolk, and finally at Paignton Devon. He married, at Lower Machen Church on 16 Feb.1892, Florence Emily Rose Heard, "Flo" or "Florrie", who was born 26 Aug.1863 at Kingsvale, Newport, Mon., and died in 1946(?). She was a daughter of William Esau Heard, J.P., (1835-1938!), a shipping broker (Jones, Heard & Co.) and theGrand Old Man of Newport (see HEARD FAMILY). They had three children.
